In 1903 2 statues were excavated in Knossos in the Greek island of Crete, now on display at the Heraklion Archeological Museum. Originally dubbed by English archeologist Arthur Evans “the snake goddess” or “the snake priestess” , there is still debate today over the true symbolism of the statues in relation to Minoan religion. Scholars have pointed out that she could align with the ‘Dionysiac cult’ where she represents a goddess of wisdom and fertility and others have suggested that she might represent Ariadne or the Phoenician goddess Astarte.
